What does raising a renewable energy industry in NEO mean to building jobs and mobilizing manufacturing opportunities? How do monitoring projects now, affect results later?
Get the full story on the Congregation of St Joseph wind-monitoring project. We’ll learn about the latest results and how you can participate in Ohio’s growing renewable energy network!
Join us for updates on Green Energy Ohio (GEO’s) efforts to accelerate wind power as an emerging energy solution for Northeast Ohio.

Forum Notes:
For the future: I-Open is continuing to build networks with our regional colleges and Universities and Libraries to further civic dialogue, discussion and deliberation of issues of high importance to prosperity for our region. With these networks we will continue to support GEO's work: ie. by advocating for clearer and sharper connections to research and student involvement.
Some partnership opportunities for our Colleges and Universities, Libraries and GEO is to continue building open economic networks in innovation and entrepreneurship pertaining to renewable energies. Yesterday's civic forum identified several opportunities to do this: build an efficient system for student action learning projects, identify new areas of strategic academic research, identify opportunities for Ohio small manufacturers, development of new behaviors to support transparency and accelerate information sharing, issues of power interconnection, and the development of ways to get energy power into the hands of individuals.
Draft Notes for Nov 1
Fletcher Miller, Presenter
Wind Power and Manufacturing potential in OH
GEO
Not a concerted effort in OH to try to bring manufacturers in OH
May not have the best wind but we have manufacturing capabilities
Early activities in response to a report in 1993.
Highest electrical rates in the country
OH ranks 1 or 2 in the state for producing key pollutants/ reduction high levels
Renewable Energy Policy Project
Great electrical infrastructure
Why monitoring?
This is where we live
OH has low wind
Little measurement available
Determine placement and size
100M data gathering
Wind location is either in rural areas or on utility structures
First Energy does not always partner - - not embracing collaboration
Comment:
If we plan for the future we should take advantage of our assets and look out into the future. We must not be too little too late.
Interns from Case Western Reserve University
Little Professors academic
Lack of entrepreneurial effort in NEO
How are our colleges and universities supporting the efforts?
University Toledo Joe Prolacy
BGSU Research turbine
Aaron:
Have outstanding requests for interns
OU interested in St Clairsville
Congregation of St Joseph
Rocky River location
Need volunteers to crunch data. There is a lot of information coming in but no one to collect and analyze.
Data validation
Run algorithms
Turbine power curve
Monitoring by others constant off the web; but will not share the data
Need champions
Wind is cheaper now than gas
Can a consortium of small manufacturers come together to leverage wind to cut electric?
What is happening with Green Mountain Energy?
Birds – GEO is involved with the Avian
Research needed about birds from Sandusky to PA very little data
Many needs for research and interns
College 360: Ohio focus
Key Ohio
Cleveland Intern .net
David from Policy Matters Ohio – has coordinated
Interns do not see opportunity in OH
Engage in dialogue to build trust to share information
Many many volunteers involved in all projects
Crib project
Get the data to engage in a public discussion
Cape Cod wind has developed a lot of public opposition
Phase One: installing data
Phase Two: public dialogue
Japan right behind in photovoltaic
GE is the only US Company in the market
Storage is a big unknown for energy - a research project
What is the state doing to encourage manufacturing here in OH?
Level playing field for incentives – research project
Conservation efficiency – get libraries to be green
There is the potential for manufacturing explosion
OH could do 5% of energy efficiency – could do a lot because of the wide open spaces
Most of the tower and blade components are mad in Europe
OH has excellent transportation for blade delivery and water/blades 50% of cost was in transport
OH is within 500 miles of most cities
The intersection of design and engineering to build a 2-part blade
