Innovation in Manufacturing: The Challenge for Smaller Manufacturing Companies

Innovation in Manufacturing
Northeast Ohio continues to be a manufacturing powerhouse. In this global age, the future of manufacturing in Northeast Ohio will come from innovations in manufacturing and automated assembly.
We have hundreds of smaller manufacturers in our region. These firms typically employ 10 to 100 employees. They manufacture for larger companies in the automotive, trucking, aerospace and other industries.
These businesses are caught in a squeeze. On the cost side, their customers are turning to suppliers in lower cost countries for some parts. At the same time, quality demands are increasing.
What's worse, skilled labor is hard to find, increasingly sophisticated computer controlled production equipment demands higher skills than our existing training programs provide.
REI has been investigating these issues over the past months, and we have developed a proposal to establish a new type of economic development initiative for smaller manufacturers. We call our initiative RAMTEC: Regional Automated Manufacturing Technology and Education Center.
RAMTEC is designed to accelerate innovation among smaller manufacturing companies.
