GOALS:
Maximize the value of sustainability knowledge to:
- Deliver tangible benefits to NEO economy
- spur innovation and growth at existing businesses
- create & attract new businesses
- leverage and grow local markets for sustainable products & services
- increase the region’s share of the sustainability export market
- Enhance NEO quality of life
- restore the health and vitality of the region’s natural systems and neighborhoods
- support and develop sustainability leadership and assets to build a regional brand
OBJECTIVES:
- demonstrate and leverage the economic and community development value of sustainability-driven action projects.
- develop a NEO Sustainability Knowledge Trust, an adaptive, open-source system to capture, co-create & integrate local and global sustainability knowledge assets, networks and processes
- test, refine and co-create Making Change Civic Knowledge Management System and ToolKit, aiming to:
- improve the speed and effectiveness of sustainability-driven civic action
- model processes for other economic and civic action in NEO and other communities
ACTIONS:
MC Sustainability Advisory Team - establish a sustainability “neutral center” of expertise -- a collaborative comprising civic-minded leaders from all sectors to leverage sustainability knowledge systems (local and national/int’l) for regional economic development in many sustainability areas
Pilot Projects: Sustainability Focus Areas will initially build on existing community momentum and projects:
- MC Collaboration ToolKit – pilot projects will test, refine & operationalize collaborative tools and processes, including:
- establishing & supporting communities & networks
- social network mapping
- collaborative strategy & fundraising planning
- project concept development & strategy
- smart workspaces & meeting design – collaborative on-line workspaces, support in effective meeting design
- Communities of Commitment: Collaborative Action Teams (CATs) – convene multi-disciplinary teams of private, public, non-profit and civic sectors for the pilot projects
- Community of Practice: Innovation Dialogues - highlight and facilitate new related business opportunities for sustainable solutions in areas such as Climate Change – targeting gap areas such as strategic management, legal, accounting & finance, and communications
- Community of Interest: Educational Forums? – general awareness-building and networking around best practices
- regional business plans - testing & refining an action research model that quantifies the industry’s regional economic potential and creates a roadmap for building sustainable industries in NEO
- Cross-sector Collaborative Projects - work with Creative Industries, BioSciences?, Financial Services and other MC theme areas to demonstrate increased value through integration and collaboration across areas.
