Roundtable on Intergenerational Learning and The Intergenerational School
Join us for a Roundtable meeting on March 8, 2-4PM, PBL Rm 106, to continue enriching intergenerational learning in NE Ohio.
The purpose of the Roundtable is to create and develop community partnerships that grow The Intergenerational School by:
* Adding more primary classes, and then a preschool and/or middle school
* Developing facilities to accommodate additional classes and the growing intergenerational and service learning programs
* Expanding science and sustainability education
* Diversifying value streams, income.
The conversations at the Tuesdays@REI meeting, February 8, underscored both the innovations in our community and the opportunities for collaboration around intergenerational learning. Dr. Peter Whitehouse opened that program with an appreciation of the Cleveland Foundation’s "Successful Aging" initiative and its five-year grant to help open The Intergenerational School on August 2000. The school provides a place for reinventing aging and community education with intergenerational learning.
Three panelists revealed synergies ripe for development. First, Dr. Cathy Whitehouse reviewed the context and history of the school, and then described how well community partners have been coming together there to empower each other’s learning and vitality. She also shared the funding disadvantage legislated for Ohio’s community schools, and the resulting need to expand The Intergenerational School for economies of scale.
Kirsten Frei-Herrman described the RSVP Experience Corps program, also supported by the Cleveland Foundation’s "Successful Aging" initiative. Currently eleven schools in our area, including The Intergenerational School, pair Experience Corps tutors with young students to practice reading. The results have proven remarkable, with seniors feeling revitalized, and children improving their literacy and attitudes towards reading. The program is expanding from 11 to 15 schools next year.
Crystal Davis helped us understand the national program, 'No Child Left Behind'. She described its contributions to education--enhanced school performance reporting, parental school choice, and teaching resources. Ms. Davis emphasized the importance of including community volunteers in education.
After an engaging Q and A, we agreed to a follow-up Roundtable and focus on The Intergenerational School’s growth.
